About Us
Mid Devon Community Recycling (MDCR)began in 1992 as a voluntary group - just a bunch of friends who were concerned about the way society was dealing with its waste.
On a completely voluntary basis we operated a weekly kerbside collection of recyclables to a limited area in order to demonstrate that the public would support such a scheme and to put the concept firmly on the political agenda.
The collection grew and grew and after 4 years MDCR became incorporated as a non-profit-distributing company with environmental and social objectives.
The Company is run on the community business model. After completing a 6-month trial period, all staff and volunteers are given the opportunity to apply for membership of the company, which entitles them to stand in the annual elections for the Board of Directors and to vote in those elections. Directors receive no payment for this part of their work.
The directors delegate day to day running of the company to a management team consisting of an Operations Manager and a Finance Manager. The Company employs about 30 people and provides work experience training for 4 learning disabled adults.
In 2006, we successfully tendered for the contract to provide a recycling collection service to all 32,000 households in the Mid Devon District Council area until 2013.
In 2008 the company received the Learning & Skills Council's Train to Gain South West Employer of the Year Award for its ‘outstanding commitment to staff training and development'.
In the same year Resource magazine named the company ‘best kerbside recycling collection in the UK'. Mid Devon Community Recycling is an Investor in People. We've come a long way in just a little more than a decade.
